The Society for East Sea has been annually holding international seminars by inviting experts from both at home and abroad in order to justify the use of “East Sea” and standardize the name of the sea between the Korean Peninsula and Japan. Launched in 1995, the seminar marked the 22nd anniversary as of 2016 and had produced a total of 326 academic papers. Participated by world–renowned scholars of geographical names, experts of international organizations, cartographers and the members of geographical name–related organizations around the world, the seminar has been firmly established as an international forum that specializes in the discussion of the names of the seas. Since 2007, the Northeast Asian History Foundation has been participating in the academic event as a co–organizer.
